    Responsibilities

    • Plans, integrates, and coordinates comprehensive occupational therapy services for acute area and outpatient. Position requires advanced skill in providing occupational therapy services for clients within wide range of disabilities;
    • Communicates with, consults, and works cooperatively with other VAMC disciplines to provide comprehensive client care;
    • Functions as a member of the Ergonomic Team. Participates in the development of ergonomics and reasonable accommodations guidelines and interventions;
    • Consults with clients and their families through client/family education, training and advising them in the nature of their disability or disease, in home programs, post hospital adjustment and community resources;

    • Makes recommendations for adaptation of architectural barriers and seating (including manual / power wheelchairs and scooters) when indicated;
    • Fabricates adaptive and orthotic devices that are not commercially available and must be developed or modified to meet needs of individual clients;
    • When assessing or providing client care, consider the age of the client as it relates to his/her ability to understand directions, provide objective self assessment or any other medical milieu appropriate to the overall treatment plan;
    • Independently solves problems related to occupational therapy, adapting and modifying treatment plans, activities, and procedures as indicated by patient status;
    • Continuously re-evaluates patient's performance and appropriately modifies treatment as indicated by patient status;
    • When indicated, evaluates patient's home environment through home visits or consultation with other health care professionals, patient and significant others, and assists patient in solving problems associated with that environment;
    • For each patient assigned, regularly documents in patient's medical record. Documentation includes: an initial evaluation, including short and long term goals;
    • Document progress reports, including treatment provided and outcomes in terms of function; and, discharge summaries, including summary of treatment outcomes in terms of goals set, equipment and education provided;
    • Develops new treatment programs, techniques, and/or refinements to current programs to address the needs of patients;
    • Participates in inter-disciplinary meetings to discuss and report on assigned patients and recommends patients in need of occupational therapy services;
    • Responsible for providing a safe, organized clinic area;
    • Orders and maintains supplies in the OT area for ongoing patient treatment;
    • Continually evaluates patient caseload to determine priority and frequency of care needs;
    • Covers for other occupational therapists during absences in order to provide continuity of patient care; Schedules patient visits to insure adequate time required for treatment;
    • Provides basic emergency intervention to the patient when indicated and follows established VA SOPs to prevent/diminish infection and further injury; Carries out other job related activities and special assignments as requested by supervisor
