Job Description

Main function - Supervises and directs patient care in the perioperative.

Duties and responsibilities-

1. Philosophy

h) Develops teaching programs as requested for use in surgical or medical management, safety, health awareness, and enhancement of patient care
i) Develops and maintains current materials for teaching and consent procedures
j) Implements approved teaching programs as requested
k) Monitors the patient education and counseling programs to assess quality and areas for improvement
l) Evaluates the outcome of teaching and counseling programs as they pertain to patients' overall satisfaction with the surgical experience
m) Welcomes suggestions and recommendations

8. Duties
a) Participates as a team member in support of the total perioperative process
b) Organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management
c) Supervises and directs patient care in a single operating room
d) Organizes nursing activities efficiently and effectively
e) Delegates activities appropriate to the abilities of available staff members
f) Considers cost containment by using supplies economically and in effective turnover time
g) Assists with supply, drug, and equipment inventories to maintain stock level and availability
h) Addresses patient needs during admission to the perioperative area, with attention to requirements specific to the outpatient setting
i) Transports patients observing policies/procedures, safety requirements, and patient needs
j) Identifies the patient and correct surgical intervention according to policy/procedure and communicates such information to all members of the surgical team
k) Reviews patients' medical records/needs to plan care with other healthcare team members
l) Provides comfort and reassurance to patient
m) Maintains patients' privacy and dignity
n) Explains intraoperative phase of routine procedures and care to the patient
o) Performs the circulating nurse's role and functions following approved operating room procedures to meet the requirements of scheduled procedures
p) Prepares operating room according to requirements of patient/procedure to be performed
q) Assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, supplies, and instruments before start of procedure and positions and adjusts equipment as required during the procedure
r) Anticipates needs of surgical team and assists anesthesia personnel by supporting patient during administration of anesthesia
s) Assists with the proper and safe positioning of the patient and prepares operative site as directed by established procedures
t) Monitors compliance with principles of aseptic technique according to accepted standards
u) Assists with identification and confirmation of operative site
v) Provides for comfort in the physical environment by monitoring designated parameters
w) Provides continuity of patient care by communicating with other perioperative care personnel and documenting records accordingly
x) Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician
y) Accurately comprehends and interprets verbal orders/directions
z) Documents patient care records and other forms accurately following policies and procedures
aa) Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about patient's status
bb) Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice
cc) Maintains order and cleanliness of perioperative areas
dd) Performs thorough patient assessment required in the outpatient setting
ee) Provides preoperative instruction and explanation of patient rights and responsibilities
ff) Describes the perioperative experience to the patient and /or significant other, including what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, and how the significant other may participate
gg) Obtains pertinent patient records
hh) Performs all preoperative testing (i.e., laboratory work, electrocardiogram, x-rays, etc.)
ii) Reports all abnormal values to anesthesiologist/attending surgeon
jj) Obtains necessary signatures
kk) Discusses all findings with anesthesiologist prior to anesthesiologist's preoperative evaluation of patient
ll) Administers necessary medication as ordered by physician according standards of practice and in accordance to Policy and Procedures.
mm) Ensures that the patient's chart is complete
nn) Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate postoperative/postanesthesia period
oo) Monitors patients and informs surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications
pp) Performs thorough postoperative patient assessment prior to discharge of the patient
qq) Develops a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment data
rr) Reviews postoperative instructions and prescriptions from the surgeon with patient and/or significant other and documents in the patient's medical record
ss) Informs patient and family about appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning home
tt) Determines that patient and/or significant other understand conditions that require immediate care/method to obtain immediate care

1. High school graduate or GED certificate recipient
2. Graduate of accredited school of nursing
3. RN with active license in appropriate state
4. AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider
5. Leadership qualities
6. Strong ethical and moral character references
7. Language skills adequate for high-level written, interpersonal, and telephone communication in American English

1. ACLS certification
2. ASC experience
3. Computer literacy
