Job Description

Our Midwest Buildings team is looking to hire a Design Engineer for our Site Design group! This position can be located in either Lansing, Grand Rapids or Detroit, Michigan! Experience with AutoDesk Civil 3D is required. New Grads Welcome!

Purpose of Position:

To apply engineering fundamentals related to a discipline in technical support of project design teams

Essential Functions:

The following duties are typical of the position, but are not all encompassing:

  • Perform engineering calculations and create estimates
  • Develop drawings by modifying or replicating a prior project, applying changes and corrections from redlined drawings, and/or creating drawings from sketches of others or from own design
  • Ensure designs are in accordance with company and client production and design standards
  • Perform QA/QC by verifying design methodology, calculations, outcomes, etc.
  • Interpret and understand drawings from multiple disciplines for specific projects and respond to requests for information regarding same
  • Conduct field inspections and surveys, investigate variables, obtain measurements, photographs, videos, and take notes; write reports documenting same
  • Research and apply code provisions to design
  • Work with senior engineers to create project designs
  • Create models, including 3D models
  • Research design options and document findings for project engineer/manager
  • Evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques and procedures, using own judgement to make adaptations and modifications to existing designs
  • Submit concept designs and work through approval processes such as permits from municipalities
  • Maintain equipment schedules and work with equipment vendors
  • Coordinate with in-house and external consultants and/or subcontractors
  • Assist with coordination of information flow to and from clients
  • Participate in group and multidisciplinary project meetings
  • Submit designs to agencies and work through approval processes
  • May coordinate and/or attend client meetings (pre-construction, coordination, etc.) and participate in public meetings
  • May provide direction to designers and drafters such as redlining plans
  • May assist in preparation of materials for proposals such as budgeting hours or expectations for deliverables and/or budget analysis and billing of projects

Education, Experience, Certifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering , Civil Engineering
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) certification desirable
  • Basic/intermediate operational understanding of the appropriate CAD software
  • Basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills
  • Able to work in team environment
