Job Description

Resident Librarian in the Sciences

Bryn Mawr College Library & Information Technology Services (LITS) invites applications from early career librarians for a three-year position as Resident Librarian in the Sciences. The library residency program is intended to offer an opportunity for entry-level librarians with an interest in research and instruction in academic libraries to begin their professional careers. As members of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Diversity Alliance, we are committed to "increasing the hiring pipeline of qualified and talented individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups." The Resident will find at Bryn Mawr a collaborative and cohesive team in the Research and Instructional Services (R&IS) department and throughout LITS, and will join a cohort of Residents/Fellows from over 50 other ACRL Diversity Alliance member institutions, as well as a local Philadelphia-area cohort.

The Resident Librarian will have particular responsibility in advancing teaching, learning, and research support, and especially information literacy in the sciences and mathematics. The Resident will profit from existing connections to these departments in R&IS and across LITS, and will build new connections with faculty and students in the sciences. The primary office will be in the Collier Science Library, with workspace in other Bryn Mawr libraries depending on individual areas of interest. In Collier, the Resident will have the opportunity to engage in management of the library, with support from LITS colleagues in Carpenter and Canaday Libraries, including supervision of a vibrant group of student workers. Bryn Mawr has a broad spectrum of undergraduate programs in the sciences and mathematics, a top-ranked 12-month postbac premed program, and graduate programs in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.

In addition to the core functions within Research & Instructional Services, professional development opportunities in LITS may include - but are not limited to - collection development, exhibition planning, digital scholarship, and participation in the digital competencies program. The Collier Science Library will be undergoing a second phase of renovation in 2020, and the Resident Librarian will play a role with LITS colleagues in decision-making about the physical space, including design and furnishing student study areas and collaboration spaces, and planning for an interactive digital classroom for LITS instruction within the library.

Cooperation with colleagues in the Haverford and Swarthmore College Libraries (the Tri-College community), and specifically with the science librarians, is strong, with opportunities to serve on local and Tri-College committees depending on interest, as well as support for professional development activities and for attending local and national conferences.

Requirements

  • Masters in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or foreign equivalent), received in 2017 or after.

  • Interest in pedagogy and information literacy

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff and students at an individual level as well as in classroom or other group settings.
  • Initiative and flexibility

The Resident will receive a competitive salary depending on education and experience, with an excellent benefits package, including 25 vacation and personal days, 13 paid holidays, and a generous retirement contribution.
