The Sound Archives Metadata Librarian is responsible to provide cataloging and metadata for published and digital materials and for the arrangement and description of archival collections of sound recordings and related materials in the Archive of Recorded Sound to allow efficient discovery of the items and collections. Archival Arrangement and Description (30%)
- Provides original cataloging for sound recordings and related materials including the preparation of authority work.
- Creates non-MARC metadata for digitization projects.
- Assists with devising and coordinating large scale cataloging projects (grant, outsourced, or in-house)
- Analyzes and documents cataloging and metadata workflow, policies, and procedures and coordinates them with Music Metadata Services and the Sound Archives Librarian.
- Remains current on local, national, and international cataloging and metadata standards and practices, OCLC Connexion, SIRSI Symphony, ArchivesSpace, etc. Remains informed of current trends in music cataloging and library metadata.
- Regularly maintains cataloging and finding aid databases and resolves cataloging issues and problems.
- Arranges archival sound recordings in all formats and materials related to collections of sound recordings according to accepted archival practices and standards to facilitate discovery for research and use.
- Describes archival sound recording collections and related materials by creating finding aids using DACS and EAD applying LCSH and authority records according to archival standards.
- Applies more product, less process principles to incoming collections to insure timely processing of new archival collections.
- Prepares detailed finding aids for collections selected for more in-depth description identified by the Head Librarian, Head of Music Metadata Services, or Sound Archives Librarian.
- Prepares processed archival collections for transfer to SAL 3
- Supervises student assistants and other staff in the Archive of Recorded Sound.
Assists in the preparation and writing of grant proposals.Other Duties (5%)

Minimum Requirements:Education & Experience:
- MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited graduate school is required or equivalent in training and experience.
- B.A. in music or equivalent is required with demonstrated subject knowledge of music history and theory. A graduate degree in music is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated knowledge of music sound recording cataloging using RDA, LC authorities and vocabularies, and MARC formats in an automated cataloging system is required. Knowledge of music cataloging for other resource types (score, book, video, etc.) is highly desirable.
- A minimum of three years' original music cataloging experience or a combination of original music cataloging and other relevant professional library experience is required. Experience creating NACO authority records is desirable. Experience with SIRSI Symphony and OCLC Connexion highly desirable.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn DACS, EAD, LCSH, authorities, XML, and archival description is required. Experience with ArchivesSpace and the creation of web-based finding aids is desirable.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn MODS is required. Knowledge of other non-MARC metadata standards, including BIBFRAME, is desirable.
- Reading ability of at least one modern European language, German, French or Italian strongly preferred. Working knowledge of other languages is desirable.
- Knowledge of audio archives principles and practices is preferred.
- Knowledge of reference materials and research tools in music and audio recordings is required.
