The purpose of this job is to evaluate, treat and care for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders, under the direction of a physician. Performs diagnostic tests and assists physicians in diagnostic procedures.


High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a respiratory care education program or the equivalent as required by the NBRC.

Six (6) monthsclinical experience.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support-BLS. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Active License issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME).

Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist.


Verifies all physician orders prior to beginning testing.
Demonstrates proficiency in performing all aspects of pulmonary function tests according to departmental policy and procedures including: spirometry, MVV, body plethysmography, nitrogen washout, DLCO, bronchoprovocation with methacholine, exercise provocation, cardiopulmonary stress tests, indirect calorimetry, 6-minute walk tests, ABGs and HAST. This includes properly assessing patient effort, maintaining good quality control according to ATS standards and validation of test results.

Assists physicians in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as flexible bronchoscopy, EBUS and Bronchial Thermoplasty. This includes proper set up of necessary supplies and equipment, knowledge of specimen retrieval devices and specimen retrieval techniques. Knowledge of specimen preparation and handling process. Demonstrates proper operation, handling, cleaning and storage of bronchoscopes. Safely and correctly operates all equipment and instruments needed for patient procedures with the established guidelines of the department and hospital policies and procedures.

Participates in Performance Improvement activities including National Patient Safety
Goals such as, hand washing and two patient identifiers, maintenance and safe use of equipment/supplies; medication management; focus audits for identified opportunities for improvement.

Performs and records daily calibration of all PFT equipment. Maintains records to assure proper patient charging for procedures, services and medications.

Assist other health care team members with patient care activities within the scope of practice acting as patient advocate at all times:
  • Actively seeks opportunities to improve patient service, including maintenance of a clean, quiet environment
  • Accepts responsibilities and duties of the all codes and activations as assigned by the Respiratory Therapy Department.
  • Accepts additional duties as assigned for the overall benefit of UMCNO.
Attends in-services relative to job scope and in compliance with the State of Louisiana Licensing requirements. Develops own personal and professional goals in conjunction with the director. Provides information and education to expand the knowledge base of co-workers and ancillaries.
