    Summary

    What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

    GS-06 Salary: $37,843 (Step 01) to $49,200 (Step 10);

    GS-07 Salary: $42,053 (Step 01) to $54,670 (Step 10)

    GS-08 Salary: $46,572 (Step 01) to $60,543 (Step 10)

    NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

    Responsibilities

    As a Hydrologic Technician within the Upper Midwest Water Science Center , some of your specific duties will include:

    • Performs routine measurement of stage and discharge using appropriate techniques, equipment and protocols.
    • Performs water-level and discharge measurements from wells and springs selecting appropriate techniques, equipment and protocols.
    • Performs field measurements such as water temperature, specific conductance, PH, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity.
    • Collects representative samples and processes varied suspended sediment, bed-load and bed material samples.
    • Installs, maintains, services, and assists in the configuration of a variety of sensing, recording and communications equipment.
    • Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.

    Physical Demands:

    The work regularly requires considerable dexterity, agility, and strenuous physical exertion such as that needed to: climb, or work from, tall ladders or scaffolding; work in areas where footing is treacherous such as on slippery river banks, in steep or rocky terrain, and in fast-moving water; lift heavy objects weighing 23 kilograms (over 50 pounds) or more; crouch or crawl in constricted areas; and defend oneself or others against physical attack.

    Work Environment:

    The work regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with visiting field sites with limited access, under adverse weather or flooding conditions, or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals. Work may require the use of special clothing or gear such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, respirators, or life jackets.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - An average of 5-10 nights per month is required.
