Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The NP scope of practice incorporates the skills and knowledge from the disciplines of nursing and medicine. Working in collaboration with a physician or a group of physicians, the NP provides timely care management for specific patient populations, including admission, ongoing assessment, symptom management, ordering/performing specified diagnostic tests and procedures. Also, orders/performs special treatment (medication therapies, clinical treatments, consultation, etc. under the direction of a specific physician or group of physicians within scope of practice following appropriate legislation. The NP provides comprehensive patient care using advanced assessment skills and a sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics and provides indirect patient care services to support patient care, promote professional education, and advanced knowledge through research and scholarly activities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collects and documents comprehensive data in a systematic and ongoing process pertinent to the patient's health or situation, involving the patient/family/caregiver when appropriate; initiates and interprets age-appropriate and condition-specific laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures; analyzes and prioritizes complex data to determine the differential diagnoses and revises diagnoses as appropriate to initiate the plan of care; derives assessments and diagnoses that are developmentally appropriate and specific to areas of growth and development, age, cultural sensitivity, and family dynamics; prescribes appropriate pharmacologic/non-pharmacological agents and interventions that are both universal and unique to the patient, and monitors/evaluates effects
  • Develops outcomes as measurable goals that provide direction for continuity of care and consistency among providers; develops, prioritizes, evaluates and modifies an individualized comprehensive plan of care; addresses each diagnosis or issue, as appropriate; derives outcomes and plans of care that involve the patient/family/caregiver when possible and are realistic to the patient/family/caregiver capabilities and resources; considers risks/benefits, costs, clinical effectiveness, current scientific evidence/clinical guidelines and clinical expertise to formulate interventions, treatments and outcomes; incorporates new knowledge and strategies to initiate change in practice if desired outcomes not achieved; maintains documentation and updates accordingly outcomes, goals and the plan of care
  • Participates in quality improvement activities or research to improve the care delivery process and patient care outcomes; uses and communicates results to initiate change in practice; uses creativity, new knowledge, and innovation to improve care; takes action to achieve goals identified during performance appraisal and peer review, resulting in changes in practice and role performance; participates in lifelong learning that improves skills and competence in clinical practice/role performance; serves as preceptor, role model, or mentor; contributes to the professional development of peers/colleagues to improve health care and to foster the profession's growth; integrates ethical considerations and research findings into practice; provides leadership by participating on committees or in professional organizations, or writing/publishing/presenting; advocates for the pediatric patient/family/caregiver; serves as a leader, influencing both healthcare/APRN practice and policy

Licensure/Certification Required:

Current Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Ohio; BLS and ACLS, NRP and STABLE certifications required

Minimum Years and Type of Experience:

Three years experience as a registed nurse and working knowledge of professional field.
