Cornell Tech seeks a Teacher-in-Residence (TIR) to join this effort as a leader in the NYC computing education community. Cornell Tech values its role in the NYC K12 computer science education community, and works closely with the NYC Dept. of Education (DOE), the NYC Computer Science Education Foundation (CSNYC) and others to support Computer Science for All, the 10-year public/private partnership that will bring computer science education to every NYC public school. Working alongside this initiative, the TIR will provide professional and curriculum development in computing education in our partner NYC public elementary and middle schools. With a strong background in computer science and education, including experience in teacher preparation/education and curriculum development, the TIR will lead efforts to catalyze computing education at partner schools and for the larger DOE community. S/he will be responsible for curating and developing professional development and curriculum for schools, while leading schools through the process of integrating computing across subject areas in elementary and middle school grades. The TIR will work with principals, teachers and students to build a presence of computing in elementary and middle school years, while building our understanding of what's possible in NYC schools.


The TIR will be a member of the Cornell Tech community. During the school year, 60-75% of the TIR's time will be spent working at 1-3 partner schools, teaching and coaching. We anticipate that the TIR will spend two days a week and most of the summer working at Cornell Tech in coordination with the Sr. Director of K12 Education, the TIR team and external partners. The entire K-12 team participates in a number of events on campus, including field trips, planning and implementing professional development, training our graduate students volunteers, and our annual conference, To Code and Beyond. We encourage TIRs to present their work at local and national conferences and support conference travel when deemed appropriate by the Sr. Director of K-12 Education. Some evening and weekend events require TIR participation.


This is a one-year position, with the opportunity to be renewed for up to two additional years at the mutual agreement of Cornell Tech and the TIR.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, computer science or a related field
  • Classroom teaching experience
  • Professional development/coaching/mentoring experience
  • Familiarity with NYC public schools and teaching evaluation systems
  • Computer Science content and pedagogy knowledge, teaching experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College coursework in computer science
  • Curriculum development experience
  • Familiarity with national CS education framework, standards, and education programs
  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary computer science curriculum/CS integration
  • Experience in project-based learning
