Providence is calling Graduates and Fellows to Internship opportunities within various Providence departments in the Portland Metro Area.

  • This is a grant-funded, paid internship opportunity. The pay is $20.26/hr.
  • This is a temporary, non-benefitted position that will last for approximately 12 weeks (up to 240 hours). The typical schedule will be 20 hours per week, however there is a lot of flexibility within the schedule.
  • There are a total of 20 open spots, 10 will be at Providence Portland Medical Center (NE Portland) and 10 will be at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (SW Portland).
  • Preference is given to applicants who are in the first generation of their families to attend college. For the purposes of these internship opportunities, this is defined as the applicant's parent/guardian has not earned a Bachelor's degree.
  • A writing sample or cover letter is appreciated.

In this position, you will:

  • Complete specifically identified office/department work assignments which provide additional value and enhancements to the normal functions of the department.
  • Assist in projects by participating in research, project implementation, PR data analysis, and/or producing reports.
  • Perform all duties in a manner which promotes team concept, caring and respect for patients/employees/community members of all ages, and which reflects the Providence Health System mission and philosophy.
  • The projects will be varied and are based on the needs of the participating departments, health system and communities we serve. Interns will be provided preceptor support along with clearly defined expectations for assigned work. Further details regarding exact departmental responsibilities will be provided after applicant screening process, however the following are some of the areas where we anticipate there to be internship opportunities*:
  • Administration (PSV)

Working to implement a daily management system.

  • Dietary Services (PPMC)

PHS is moving to new nomenclature for our diets that are designed for our patients with swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia). The standard tool is called IDDSI: International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative ( This is a multidisciplinary project that includes patient dining, dietary and speech therapy. Adopting this will provide standard tools to ensure patients are receiving the appropriate food and liquids to keep them safe during meals.

  • Emergency Management (PPMC)

The regional Emergency Management department is responsible for guiding our ministries in preparing for and responding to disasters. Our work is varied, ranging from office work developing plans and procedures to more active tasks throughout the hospitals. We are looking for an intern who is willing to roll up their sleeves and work with us on our summer projects including hospital evacuation planning, mass casualty preparedness and disaster exercises.

  • Foundations (PPMC)

Providence Foundations of Oregon is looking to partner with a graduate student intern to take on a variety of projects. Our Foundations raise philanthropic dollars to support the mission of Providence Health & Services. Our opportunities for internship support run the gamut from assisting with special events, to developing communication materials, or helping us build new volunteer committees consisting of young people who want to give back to their healthcare community. Our timing is flexible and we'll work to make this a meaningful experience for all involved.

  • Human Resources (PSV and PPMC)

The HR Intern will support the preparation and delivery of the New Caregiver Experience (NCE), coordination and distribution of information related to BOLI legal poster, and distribution of Tri-Met passes. This would largely involve administrative and coordination support. Also, various projects that will require excel or other analytical skills to pull data, review it, provide some preliminary summaries, and then work with our HR team to do some more thoughtful/in-depth analysis.

  • Nursing Administration (PSV)

The Providence St. Vincent Medical Center's Nursing Services Administration supports nurses at the bedside. Projects focus on Caring Reliably (providing safe care, excellent clinical outcomes and outstanding patient experience), Capacity (providing the care in the most appropriate setting and meeting the community's needs), and Caregiver Engagement (recognizing that engaged caregivers provide the best care and experience). Interns on this team can expect variety which will include a long-term project and the opportunity to do many of these activities: process improvement, evidence-based practice, research, project management, teaching, and others based on experience, business needs and preferences.

  • Transportation Demand Management (TDM) (PPMC)

In this position you will assist in the development and implementation of programs that promote and encourage alternative modes of transportation, including parking management, TDM compliance and surveying. This work requires strong independence, initiative and creativity. TDM work is about changing habits and engaging employees through outreach activities, commute incentives, and transportation fairs. This work is justified and programs adapt through data collections and analysis.

As a TDM intern, you will be available to work varied shifts including occasional evenings and weekends for meetings and events. You have motivation to inspire change and bring strong oral and written communication skills, good understanding of excel (smart sheets a plus) and an eye for marketing and promotion.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of graduate program or fellowship within the last 6 months -or- enrolled in and working towards a graduate degree program or fellowship

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Enrolled in or completion of a graduate degree program or fellowship in medical research, mental health, public health, business, finance, healthcare administration, or a related field within last 6 months
  • Experience working or volunteering to address health disparities
  • 1 year of experience with Microsoft Office applications
