The Physician Assistant or Advanced Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing office based patient care with physician supervision. Developing, implementing, and utilizing triage protocols for the SMH Physicians Network multispeciality physician offices. Primary affiliation with Primary Care practices. Patient care includes evaluating and managing new and established patients medical care, ordering diagnostic tests, referring patients to surgical specialist, and Louisiana NP or PA's prescriptive authority is required. NP or PA exercises autonomy in medical decision making and provides a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Additional duties may include responsibility for staff and/or patient education, research, and administrative duties. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital's strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Develops, implements, utilizes daily patient screening triage protocols for patient care assessments. Coordinates the daily medical care and communicates to the supervising medical provider the tasks required to provide quality care. Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, and treats illnesses including giving injections and providing post operative care (i.e., suturing wounds). Consults with physicians as needed and refers patients to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of a NP or PA's scope of work. Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care. Returns home health care providers, medical providers and/or patient calls providing continuity of care concerning patient problems. Responds to emergencies including use of CPR. Counsels patient/family on preventive health care. Maintains and promotes a cooperative team-work attitude with clinical and non-clinical staff. Documents accurate patient information and care in medical record and may maintain department statistical database for research purposes.
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Preferred: Family practice physicians office experience. Physician Assistant - Bachelor's degree and successful completion of accredited physician assistant program. Nurse Practitioner -Graduate of an accredited RN program. Must currently be licensed in the State of Louisiana. High School Diploma Required, GED not acceptable. Required: Knowledge of medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants. Louisiana Prescriptive Authority required. Familiar with anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine and physical diagnosis. Knowledge of patient assessment techniques including taking medical histories, performing physicals, evaluating health status, including state of wellness and compliance with care recommendations. Knowledge of diagnosing and treating medical problems and developing care plans. Knowledge of documentation in medical records in confidential manner. Knowledge of and performance of neuro exam and basic pain management. Skill in gathering and analyzing physiological, socioeconomic, and emotional patient data. Skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention or referral. Skill in developing/revising patient care plan based on patient status. Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians on complicated cases. Ability to educate patients, families and staff in user-friendly manner. Physician Assistant - Bachelor's degree and successful completion of accredited physician assistant program. Nurse Practitioner -Graduate of an accredited RN program. Must currently be licensed in the State of Louisiana. High School Diploma Required, GED not acceptable. Licensure/Certification: Preferred: If Physician Assistant - National certification from the National Commission on Certification of PA's. To maintain their national certification, PA's must log 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and sit for a recertification every six years. State PA license also required.
