Job Description


  • American Library Association accredited Master's degree in Library/Information Science OR equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience.
  • Experience in providing services in one or more areas of medical librarianship. Examples of such services may include, but are not limited to, systematic reviews, evidence-based practice, case-based learning, research data management, research impact measures, or computational support for research data workflows.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the benefits of diversity and inclusion throughout an organization.
  • Ability to initiate and actively engage in conversations with faculty and/or administrators.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in the physical, life, health, or related sciences.
  • Experience in a health science or academic research library.
  • Demonstrated teaching skills, with an understanding of instructional design principles, particularly in an eLearning environment.
  • An interest in and aptitude for learning and applying new technologies, such as scripting/software for data manipulation or visualization (e.g., R, Python, OpenRefine, nVIVO, VosViewer, or Tableau).

The Medical School Liaison is a member of the Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) division of the University Libraries, which includes the Bio-Medical Library (, the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine, and the Veterinary Medical Library. HSL is led by the Director and Associate University Librarian for the Health Sciences, and the position reports to the Associate Director for Education and Research Services.

The successful candidate will be one of three liaisons assigned to the Medical School ( and will collaborate with colleagues in HSL as well as across the University Libraries system. The Medical School Liaison will be an outgoing and engaged professional who can develop collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, and colleagues from diverse communities and cultures. The individual will also possess an understanding of patient care, basic and clinical research, and medical education in order to develop and offer services and programs. Areas of responsibility include the integration of evidence-based practice and health literacy into the Medical School curriculum and eLearning environment, support for research and scholarship, including systematic reviews and the management of research data, and the application of methods to measure research impact. Experience with, or an interest in learning, data visualization techniques or scripting/software that supports research data workflows is desirable.

The individual will also contribute to the knowledge base of the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement, while working toward continuous appointment status.

Responsibilities of the Medical School Liaison:

  • Actively engage and consult with a diverse community of faculty, administrators, clinicians, and students in assigned departments, including graduate programs in the biomedical sciences, to understand their teaching, learning, and research methods, and to identify ways in which library services could deepen their understanding and advance their scholarship.
  • Develop and teach classes and workshops, integrating evidence-based practice, health literacy, and new technologies into the learning environment. Classroom teaching includes for-credit classes, such as Family Medicine Clerkship 7600, a required clerkship course for all 3rd-year medical students.
  • Collaborate with researchers to develop effective strategies that support open science and research reproducibility, including data management and open access publishing.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues on developing and offering research services, such as systematic reviews, research impact reports, or software carpentry consultations.
  • Provide leadership for and contribute to Libraries-wide projects and initiatives.
  • Contribute to the knowledge base of the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement.

This is a full-time, 12-month, continuous-appointment track, academic professional position with probationary appointment of Assistant or Associate Librarian. The Libraries offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits and substantial moving allowance.
