Job Description

North Woods Career Prep (transitioning from Life Skills Columbus North) is on a NEW mission for the 2019-2020 school year. At North Woods Career Prep it is our mission to "change lives by preparing students for in-demand careers", with a focus on career certifications for each student.

Job purpose

The Teacher effectively utilizes their prior education and training, sound classroom management, technology and the school's curriculum to successfully educate and graduate students. The Teacher develops lesson plans using a variety of techniques such as visual aids, creative projects and technology to engage students in their learning.

Duties and responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach all subjects following the school's course of study or as assigned while utilizing technology and varying teaching modalities
  • Plan and execute instructional lesson plans
  • Maintain a positive school environment through effective conflict resolution, collaboration, positive reinforcement, and educational leadership modeling
  • Maintain a clean safe classroom environment, and discipline in an orderly fashion conducive to good learning
  • Motivate students to achieve their full attendance, academic, and behavioral goals, as well as other goals identified
  • Keep accurate records for each student, such as grade books and progress reports, lesson plans, attendance records, and behavior/discipline records
  • Establish and maintain a positive rapport with students, parents, staff, school administration, and other stakeholders
  • Maintain effective communication on an ongoing basis with students, parents, staff, school administration, and other stakeholders
  • Prepare and administer all standardized tests as directed
  • Work with the teaching staff to improve standardized and proficiency testing results
  • Recognize opportunities for teachable moments with students
  • Use only forms or reporting records that have been approved and or adopted by the school
  • Gather, maintain, and submit all student information and forms in a professional and timely manner
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities
  • Required to attend and/ or participate in such other activities as directed by the Administrator such as: faculty meetings (before or after school hours), open houses, commencement exercises, chaperone student activities, provide guidance for students, participate in professional learning communities, study and help resolve school problems, and participate in the preparation of courses of study - these activities demonstrate valuable support for the school
  • Perform student home visits as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Maintain confidentiality concerning all student information and any professional matters
  • Utilizes effective time management and exhibits punctuality on the job daily
  • Strong content knowledge in one or more content areas
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exhibit genuine care for children and a passion for teaching
  • Strong ability to gather, analyze, and interpret student data to make sound educational decisions
  • Exhibit flexibility regarding decision-making, daily challenges, and job duties
  • Ability to work in a diverse educational setting
  • Understand the community and student demographics
  • Understand state testing as well as state standards
  • Proficient in computer applications, including MS Office Suite, e-mail, and internet applications

Working conditions

  • Interaction with students, staff, and parents/guardians
  • Dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other computer and technology related components


  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Valid state teaching license in appropriate area required
  • Prior experience with, knowledge of, or willingness to learn the RtI process
  • Meet HQT status in appropriate content area(s)
  • Satisfactory completion of state required criminal history check

Physical requirements

  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Standing for extended periods of time, sitting occasionally
  • Ability to move around the building
