San Diego Humane Society is hiring a Full-Time Regular Animal Caregiver for our San Diego Campus!

SUMMARY: Provide daily care and enrichment for shelter animals as well as assisting with transport and assessment of animals. Work closely with both adoption and admissions counselors to insure the best possible adoptions and introductions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Complete daily cleaning routines in a timely manner, maintaining assigned area in a clean, organized and professional manner.
  • Learn and follow infection control procedures for potential or known illnesses.
  • Clean and disinfect kennels and dispose of animal waste.
  • Provide kennel enrichment, train, and socialize animals in assigned area as time permits
  • Maintain supply of fresh water, appropriate food, and clean bowls.
  • Perform dog to dog introductions.
  • Facilitate dog play groups with multiple dogs, following current protocol.
  • Monitor the health of shelter animals; follow established procedures if symptoms of illness arise based on the degree of illness or injury.
  • Administer daily medications and treatments.
  • Assist, as needed, to restrain incoming pets for vaccinations, general worming and examination.
  • Assist with the behavior assessment of cats and dogs as scheduled.
  • Drive the Society van to transport animals, materials, and animal care supplies to various locations in San Diego and Oceanside.
  • Assist supervisor with training of new volunteers and oversee volunteers when assigned to work area.
  • Enter data and notes utilizing data-base (Shelter Buddy) software ensuring notes are clear and concise.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct supervision but has the responsibility for volunteers working in the animal care and adoption areas.

SALARY: This position starts at a rate of $13.97 per hour and salary will be commensurate with experience.


EDUCATION, SKILL, EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent. Experience working with animals in a shelter, kennel, vet clinic or volunteer environment. Working knowledge of animal breeds, general care and behavior related information. Must be independent worker with good organizational skills, ability to multi-task and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of or willingness to learn and perform euthanasia procedures for untreatable medical or behavioral conditions. Must be able to complete and pass required training, when provided by the society.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Individual will frequently be required to stand and walk for 4-5 hours at a time to complete routine. Will sit, talk, hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level; lift and carry up to 50 pounds of materials and lift, push, and pull up to 100 pounds for situations of restraining or moving animals and lifting food and animal care supplies. Repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and waist. Reasonable accommodations may be made for enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Will work primarily on site at animal care facility, with the occasion for off-site special and mobile events. There is a potential of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals. Work with cleaning/disinfecting solutions typically used in an animal shelter.
